Sliding, Canadian Style

I love going to visit my Grandma in Fort St John, 45 minutes away. Lately though, I have let life get in the way of me making time for a visit. Today, I made time, and I'm SO glad I did. My Grandma is one of my closest friends, and visiting with her always refreshes my soul and puts a smile on my face :)

I didn't want to take the older two girls out of school to go, so I sent them to school and started getting the younger two in the van. My Grandpa called just before I left to remind me to bring their snow gear so we could check out the ice slides! I had heard lots about them before, but have never been, so I was excited to bring Myka and Danica.

After a cup or two of much needed coffee with my Grandma, the five of us set out for the slides. After seeing it, I kind of wish we had gone last weekend, when all the ice sculptures were there. The slides themselves are pretty impressive...I can't imagine what the sculptures must have been like!
The slides are built into the side of a huge snow pile. When I first heard about the slides, I imagined that they were carved out of the hill and then flooded with water to make them icier. They were so much cooler than I imagined though. My Grandma said that they make them out of blocks of ice set into the hill. The result is a slide that looks just like a playground slide, complete with edges so the kids stay on track. There are three of them side by side. I can only imagine how much fun the older girls would have racing each other to the bottom!

The girls loved them as much as I thought they would. Grandpa took them to the top of the hill so Grandma and I could stand at the bottom and watch them come down. It was so cute watching Danica get off the slide so quickly at the bottom just so she could get back to the top as fast as she could! They slid until their snow pants were soaked with melted snow and the wind had chilled their faces. If it wasn't for the cold wind, we probably could have stayed out their all afternoon; it was a beautiful day out!

I'm still smiling this evening thinking about how much fun we had with Great Grandma and Grandpa. I'm so glad that my girls get to spend time with my Grandma and have the same fun experiences with her that I remember as a little girl! Also, I can't wait to go back and bring the rest of the family!

oh yeah, my husband spoiled me with new shades...I'm in love :)

  1. Oh I am in tears looking at these photos of my old stomping grounds and seeing my beautiful family :) Grandma and Grandpa you both look great! I miss you all so much :( xxoxxo

    1. I didn't mean to make you cry sis! I miss you so much too! I can't believe how much fun Grandpa had with the girls...Grandma said he's been missing spending time with Alexa lately and was pretty excited when he heard I was bringing my girls there today. One day soon we'll get to hang out!!

  2. Ah! How fun! We're headed to Winterlude tomorrow... Can't wait!
    P.S. Love those shades!

    1. Lena, you live in Quebec, right? I bet they have awesome winter activities there! I visited once when I was a little girl, but we went in the summer. I remember going to a water park...I think it was near Gatineau?
